St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 27, 1999 SDSM& T TO HOST BLACK HILLS HYDROLOGY CONFERENCE The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) is going to host the USGS ( United States Geological Survey) Black Hills Hydrology Conference September 15- 16, 1999. Dr. Arden Davis, Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering at SDSM& T, is one of three organizing chairs for the conference. The other two chairs are Mr. J. Foster Sawyer, South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Dr. Michael Strobel, U. S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division. Topics related to the hydrology of the Black Hills will be the focus of the conference. A sample of the many topics to be addressed include abandoned mines, current mines, and water quality; forestry related to water quality; GIS and digital issues; modeling of ground water and surface water; streamflow and ground- water recharge to aquifers; and hydrogeology. SDSM& T professors who will be presenting papers include Dr. William Capehart, Dr. Jack Redden, Dr. Arden Davis, Dr. Scott Kenner, Dr. Sherry Farwell, Dr. Patrick Zimmerman, Dr. Thomas Fontaine, Dr. Stanley Howard, Dr. Cathleen Webb, Dr. Alvis Lisenbee, and Dr. Perry Rahn. SDSM& T graduate and doctorate students presenting papers include Cheryl Naus, Ghaith Hamade, Aaron Asquith, Christopher Johnson, Gregory Jarrell, Melissa Reis, Clyde Lipp, Fanguang Meng, and Cheryl Naus.
