St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 9, 1999 BUFFALO BONANZA TO OFFER ENTERTAINMENT FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE Rapid City's new Children's Science Center is hosting a special event this weekend, a Buffalo Bonanza, taking place Saturday, July 10 from 10: 00 am – 2: 00 pm. Held to celebrate the buffalo or bison, the Buffalo Bonanza will offer a variety of activities for young and old alike to enjoy. Visitors will be able to make beaded jewelry with buffalo sinew, get their face painted with earth colors mixed with buffalo grease, play with toy horses made from buffalo bones, and participate and learn how the Plains Indians would paint on buffalo hide with earth colors utilizing straight lines, bright colors, and no black. The Buffalo Bonanza will provide an educational opportunity for individuals to learn how the buffalo was utilized by the Plains Indians not only for their meat, but in numerous other ways as well. Various parts of the buffalo including a tail, beard, bladder, teeth, dewclaws, foot bones, wool, rawhide, and sinew will be on exhibit displaying their use many years ago. Two guest speakers, Lakota George, a Native American story- teller and flute maker, and Donovan Sprague, an instructor of Lakota Arts, will be giving presentations throughout the event. Admission to the Buffalo Bonanza is $ 3 for adults, and $ 1 and 2 cans of food for children. The canned food will be donated to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
