St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( July 5, 1999) SDSM& T TO HOST " LIFE ON THE GREAT PLAINS: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY SYMPOSIUM" The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is going to host " Life on the Great Plains: An Interdisciplinary Symposium, " a conference sponsored by the South Dakota Humanities Council and the Great Plains Popular Culture Association/ American Culture Association. The conference seeks to bring together scholars from a wide variety of disciplines to explore life on the Great Plains at the end of the 20th century. The conference will take place September 30 to October 2, 1999 at the Radisson Hotel in Rapid City. Presentations and discussions will consider such subjects as the history, communication, places, customs, beliefs, or creative productions of people of the Great Plains. Presentation topics will include " The Delicate Dance of Technology and Faith, " " Learning to Leave the High Plains, " " A Great Plains Friendship: Lakota and White Women, " and many more. Keynote speakers include Jane Curry and Patricia Nelson Limerick. Curry is an author, storyteller, performer, and recovering academic. Her accomplishments include teaching at Lafayette College, touring with the Minnesota Chautauqua, publishing three books, and performing her solo shows nationally and internationally since 1983. At the conference Curry will perform her solo show entitled " Samantha ‘ Rastles' the Woman Question." Patricia Nelson Limerick is a Western American historian, and is currently a professor of history at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary appointments and has served on a number of advisory boards and committees. Limerick has published a wide variety of books, articles, and reviews, including her best known work, The Legacy of Conquest, which has had a major impact on the field of Western American History. Other special presenters will include Dr. Mark McGinnis and Dr. Orval Van Deest. McGinnis will present his " Elders of the Faith" project which consists of acrylic portraits and interviews of elders of a variety of religions active in the Dakotas. Dr. Van Deest will present a Chautaqua program in costume on the life, poetry, and melodrama of Captain Jack Crawford. Registration for the conference is $ 25 if received before September 3. Participants can register for special activities at an additional cost.
