St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( June 21, 1997) SDSM& T CONCRETE CANOE TEAM WINS SEVENTH PLACE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology won 7th place in the National Concrete Canoe Competition held June 20- 21 at Cleveland State University. SDSM& T's concrete canoe was named Icebreaker. SDSM& T competed against 24 other universities from across the nation and Canada who had earned a berth in the national competition after winning their Regional ASCE Conference. SDSM& T was the only university in a 15- state region ( Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming) to compete in this year's event. The smallest public university in the 1997 national competition, South Dakota Tech competed against many larger universities, some with enrollments 14 or 15 times higher -- such as UCLA, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, Penn State, and University of Wisconsin- Madison. The 1997 National Concrete Canoe first place title went to the Florida Institute of Technology. SDSM& T placed in the top ten in five individual events. For the final product, Tech captured first place and placed third in the technical paper. In the racing events, the team won sixth place in the co- ed sprints and the women's sprints and placed seventh in the men's sprints. South Dakota Tech's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) has represented SDSM& T 8 of the 10 years that the national concrete canoe competition has been held. Tech won the national competition in 1995. The national competition is sponsored by ASCE and Master Builders, Inc. Members of the SDSM& T Icebreaker team and their home towns are as follows: Emily Schaffer, Aberdeen; Brenda Flottmeyer, Black Hawk; John Gesick, Marion; David Guhin, New Brighton MN; Jed Brich, Ogallala NE; Jessica Gould, Piedmont; Charlie Baker, Sol Brich, Alyssa Demos, Kedar Deo, Holly Guilliaume, Christy Heuer, Nicole Johnston, Ed Liu, Michelle Nielsen, Deborah Paulsen, Kent Reimann, Jeff Thomason, Sara Troutman, Shane Troutman, Rapid City; Josh Warren, Sheridan WY; Dana Foreman, Winner; and Mark Mutziger, Yankton. Faculty advisors are Dr. M. R. Hansen and Dr. Wendell Hovey.
