Sunrayce is a biennial intercollegiate competition to design, build and race solar- powered cars in a challenging long- distance event. The Solar Motion Team uses this project to display proficiency in the areas of business and product development, creativity, resourcefulness, technical innovation, engineering excellence, teamwork and good sportsmanship. In order to enter the qualifying competition Tech's student team first had to pass the scrutineering – a series of 5 tests administered by professional engineers from Boeing, General Motors, and EDS. The five tests include Dynamic, Sizing/ Body, Array, Electrical, and Mechanical. Once the team passes all five tests they enter the qualifying competition. Tech was one of 23 teams who made it to the qualifying round, and one of 13 that did not pass qualifying. In order to pass qualifying, each team must drive their solar- powered car a distance of 125 miles in less than 8 hours. Dakota Heat, Tech's car, did not make it. The car ran out of power after traveling 111 of the 125 miles needed to qualify. " It is basically like taking a test, " said team leader Ken Harding. " We took a test and got a B rather than an A." " Last weekends qualifying was a chance to show teams where they are, if they can travel a long distance, " said Harding. " It gives you a chance to get input from professionals and learn how to improve the car." The next step for Dakota Heat will be a second qualifying competition held June 16 at the Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia. Once Tech's team passes that competition, they will enter the Sunrayce ' 99 – a race from Washington, D. C. to Orlando, Florida June 20- 29. Team members include seniors Jon Busby of Yankton, Dale Brech, and Angie Monheim of Rapid City, Electrical Engineering majors; senior Tony Bader of Hillsboro MO, Metallurgical Engineering major; sophomore Matt Mitzel of Gillette WY, Electrical Engineering major; freshman Josh Ruzzo of Yankton, Computer Science major; junior Brendan Getz of Sidney MT, Computer Engineering major; sophomore Zane Green of Sundance WY, Computer Science major; freshmen Craig Berens of Chancellor, and Chris Hofer of Freeman, Computer Engineering majors; and senior Nick Svalstad of Hermosa, Mechanical Engineering major. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0599 Sunrayce Qualifying results) |
