St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( May 3, 1999) LOCAL STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN SDSM& T UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) Undergraduate Research Symposium was held Tuesday, April 20, 1999 in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Senior Design Fair. Jeremiah Marsden of Sheridan took first place in the Science/ Math division for his project entitled " Synthesis of a Novel Indigoid Polymer by Tandem Aldol Reactions." Marsden is a sophomore Chemistry major at Tech. The Symposium gave students an opportunity to share their research experiences with peers, faculty and staff members. First place winner in the Engineering division was junior Brigette Hornig, a Chemical Engineering major from De Smet for her project entitled " Combustion Synthesis in Gasless Reacting Systems." Second place winner in the Engineering division was Dustin Harrison, a junior Computer Engineering major from Rapid City, and Scott Johnson, a sophomore Electrical Engineering major from Belle Fourche, for their project entitled " Novel Antenna for Ground Penetrating Radar." Other presenters and their project titles include: Jessica Gould ( Jr, CEE, Rapid City), " Necessary Stream Characteristics for a Cold- Water Brown Trout Fishery"; Terry Apa ( Sr, ChE, Rapid City) and Mike Peterson ( Sr, ChE, Rapid City), " Design of High Temperature Laboratory Reactor for Catalytic Dehydration of Propane"; Travis Downing ( Jr, Met, Irvine, CA), " Nanomechanical Analysis of the Interphase in Polymer Matrix Composites"; Erik Koski ( Jr, ChE, Rapid City), " The Addition of Fine Silicon Powder to Solutions Used in the PCA Processes"; and Matt Meland ( Sr, ChE, Cedar Rapids IA), " Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Pump Sizing Experiment". ++ 30++ [ Photo caption: Jeremiah Marsden displays his project at the SDSM& T Undergraduate Research Symposium.] ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0599 Undergraduate Research Symposium local Sheridan WY) |
