St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( May 3, 1999) LOCAL STUDENT MEMBER OF TECH'S SOLAR MOTION TEAM The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology's Solar Motion Team will be competing at the Sunrayce Qualifying events May 6 through May 9, 1999. Sophomore Zane Green of Sundance is a member of Tech's Solar Motion Team whose solar- powered vehicle, Dakota Heat, will be gearing up for competition this summer. At the qualifying competition, held at the General Motors proving ground in Michigan, Dakota Heat must drive a distance of 125 miles. Sunrayce is a biennial intercollegiate competition to design, build and race solar- powered cars in a challenging long- distance event. The Solar Motion Team uses this project to display proficiency in the areas of business and product development, creativity, resourcefulness, technical innovation, engineering excellence, teamwork and good sportsmanship. This year's Sunrayce will take place June 20- 29, 1999 from Washington D. C. to Orlando, Florida. This year's Solar Motion Team is building on the strengths from the past two cars, Solar Rolar, and Dakota Sun, to build its most competitive racecar to date. Dakota Heat has an integrated computer surveillance system, advanced aerodynamic optimization, and high quality mechanical systems. Tech's Solar Motion Team has had outstanding results from the previous two years of competition. Their honors include: one of few teams to win national recognition; recipient of the top placing Rookie Award, and recipient of the Humanitarian Award for race safety in 1995; earned the only Team Spirit award in 1997; and won the Best Use of Technology honor. This year's team is led by senior Ken Harding of Rapid City, Mechanical Engineering major, and includes seniors Jon Busby of Yankton, Dale Brech, and Angie Monheim of Rapid City, Electrical Engineering majors; senior Tony Bader of Hillsboro MO, Metallurgical Engineering major; sophomore Matt Mitzel of Gillette WY, Electrical Engineering major; freshman Josh Ruzzo of Yankton, Computer Science major; junior Brendan Getz of Sidney MT, Computer Engineering major; freshmen Chris Hofer of Freeman and Craig Berens of Chancellor, Computer Engineering majors; and seniors Will Kroll of Corbett OR and Nick Svalstad of Hermosa, Mechanical Engineering majors. ++ 30+ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0599 Sunrayce local Sundance WY) |
