St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( May 11, 1999) LOCAL STUDENT DELIVERED SENIOR CLASS MESSAGE AT SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY COMMENCEMENT ON MAY 8, 1999 When she was a little girl Amanda Sampson did not fall asleep to her daddy reading her bedtime stories about Snow White and Cinderella, rather she fell asleep to math equations and theorems. Amanda is a mathematics major at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) who graduated with high honors on Saturday, May 8, 1999 at the 139th commencement ceremony held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena. Did I forget to mention she delivered the senior class message? Amanda is from Hill City, South Dakota and grew up in a family with two parents who both hold a master's degree in mathematics. She knew at a young age that mathematics was the path she was going to follow through school and as she begins her professional career. How she ended up at Tech was just as likely as her choice of major. Amanda has two uncles who attended Tech, and her mother strived to be a graduate yet her father wanted otherwise. " My mother always wanted to go to Tech and felt close ties to the school, " said Sampson. " It has an excellent reputation and I felt it was a good place to start my education in mathematics, " she added. During her four years on campus Sampson has been active in many clubs and organizations that include Phi Eta Sigma, Order of Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Society of Women Engineers, Students Against Drunk Driving ( SADD), TONITE, Student Association, and the Drama club. Leadership positions she has held include serving as Student Association junior and senior class president, president of Phi Eta Sigma, treasurer of Order of Omega, and guard and pride leader of Alpha Delta Pi. " I just stuck my head into anything and everything I could think of, " said Sampson. " My parents always told me that college is more than schoolwork. They told me to meet people, learn things about myself, and have fun, and that's what I did." When asked what she learned most while at Tech Amanda said it was to appreciate the ones you love, and time management. " Advice I would give incoming freshmen – buy a planner! There is no way I could have stayed on top of my classes and been involved in so many activities had I not had a planner and learned how to prioritize, schedule, and breathe." After reviewing several job offers, Amanda accepted a position at Raytheon in Dallas, Texas. She will begin working at Raytheon on June 14 in the systems engineering department.
