St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 13, 1999) ROGER ZWIEG TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT SOUTH DAKOTA SPACE DAY ' 99 Roger Zwieg, a South Dakota native and Senior Research Pilot assigned to the NASA L. B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, will be the keynote speaker at South Dakota Space Day ' 99. The 5th Annual South Dakota Space Day will be held Friday, April 23 at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. The theme for this year's event, which is organized by the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC), is " NASA and the Environment: Where Earth and Space Meet." Roger Zwieg attended South Dakota State College in Brookings where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology and Chemistry and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force. He went on to Jet Pilot Training at Reese Air Force Base in Texas. During his Air Force career Zwieg worked as an Air Force Jet Instructor Pilot, completed USAF Squadron Officers School, and obtained a Degree in Personnel Management from LaSalle University. In 1970 Zwieg began the interview and testing process to be chosen as a NASA Research Test pilot. Zwieg's duties at NASA have included designation as a Flight Director for the Lunar Landing Training Vehicle program; work as a flight instructor in the NASA Skylab program; and instructor pilot and flight examiner for the American prime crew astronauts assigned to the Joint American Apollo- Soyuz Test program. He has been associated with the NASA Space Shuttle Program since its inception and has instructed each and every NASA Space Shuttle pilot to ever fly the Space Shuttle. This year's South Dakota Space Day is sponsored by Black Hills FiberCom, Black Hills Corporation's new telecommunications subsidiary, which will be providing a full suite of communications services to Rapid City and the Northern Black Hills beginning this summer. Space Day is an outreach education project of the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC), which is supported in part by a grant from NASA. Black Hills State University, an SDSGC educational affiliate, is hosting this year's event. SDSGC members include the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T), South Dakota State University, Augustana College, and the EROS Data Center. Industrial affiliates are Horizon's Inc., Rapid City; Raven Industries, Sioux Falls; and Raytheon STX, Sioux Falls. Educational affiliates include Black Hills State University, Cheyenne River Community College, Lower Brule Community College, Oglala Lakota College, Sinte Gleska University, Sisseton Wahpeton Community College, Sitting Bull College, Science Linkages in the Community - more – Page 2 ( SLIC), Scientific Knowledge for Indian Learning & Leadership ( SKILL), South Dakota Discovery Center & Aquarium, and the Teaching SMART program of Girls Inc., Rapid City.
