St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 19, 1999) SDSM& T MINI BAJA TEAM HAS A STRONG SHOW AT WESTERN COMPETITION The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) Mini- Baja team competed in the Western Competition Thursday April 15 through Saturday April 17 at Kansas State University in Manhattan Kansas. They returned to campus Sunday night after a strong showing in the competition. Seventy- two teams from fifty- eight different schools participated in the event. Tech's Mini- Baja team placed in the top ten in five out of the seven events of the competition. They took 4th place in the Hill Climb event; 6th place in Safety and Design; 8th place in Maneuverability; 9th place in Sales presentation; and 9th place in Acceleration. A broken axle took the team out of the endurance run, and they finished 42nd in cost. " The team managed to place above some very prestigious schools. I was proud of the students, " said faculty advisor Dan Dolan. " They represented us well. On a very limited budget they put together one of the best cars at the event, " he added. SDSM& T's Mini- Baja team leader is Arlin Sandbulte, a senior Mechanical Engineering major from Laverne MN. Other team members who attended the competition are senior Nathan Selchert ( ME, Jamestown ND), senior Matt Helde ( ME, Rapid City), senior Jeff Major ( MET, Platteville CO), senior Dan Lerew ( MET, Rapid City), sophomore Jaaron Johnson ( ME, Rapid City), freshman Don Wishard ( ME, Lantry), ++ 30++ [ Media are invited to attend the SDSM& T Senior Design Fair, Tuesday, April 20 from 9am- 4pm in the Surbeck Student Center where the Mini Baja vehicle will be displayed.
