This year's challenge is to design a Cargo Ship to transport food ( pennies) across a 12- foot ocean using only rubber bands, balloons or springs. Forty- two students, mostly freshmen, will participate. The contest will be held Monday, April 19 at 3: 00 pm. outside of the ME lab in the Civil- Mechanical building. " The design objective is to transport as much food as quickly as possible across the ocean without getting any wet, " said Heidi Heilhecker, instructor of Mechanical Engineering. " Of course safety for the opposing team, you, and any spectators should also be a consideration." The cargo ships will be tested in a competition with other ships based upon speed, safety, weight of the ship and amount of food carried. Each penny represents a crate of food. If at any time during the competition the food gets wet, the team will be disqualified. Projects the ME 110 students have designed in the past include Tank Launcher, Ping- Pong Packer, and Rope Crawler.
