St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 21, 1999) LOCAL STUDENT FINISHES IN 3RD PLACE AT WEEKEND COMPETITION The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) Student Branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers ( IEEE) competed in a fire- fighting robot competition the weekend of April 16- 18, 1999. Jason Ash of Shenandoah was on Tech's team which finished in third place out of 16 competitors. Ash is a senior mechanical engineering major at SDSM& T. The competition was at the IEEE Region 5 Conference held at Shreveport, Louisiana. In the fire- fighting robot competition, the robot must navigate autonomously through a maze and then extinguish the flame of a candle and return to home base without touching any of the maze walls.
