Maribeth H. Price, Larry Stetler, and Colin Paterson are giving two geology classes at Tech a new twist— you will be able to take them over the Internet. They have redesigned the two most popular geology courses, Physical Geology and Historical Geology, and will begin offering them in the Fall of 1999. " We want to make these courses available to a much bigger group of people than Tech students", say the geologists( INDICATE WHO SAID THIS). " New policies by the South Dakota Board of Regents require that all students complete a minimum of 7 credits of science courses. As the only geology program in the state, we want to offer all students in South Dakota the opportunity to take geology as their science requirement. People can get very interested in rocks, minerals, landscapes, and dinosaurs, because they are all right out there to see, and processes such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and climate change affect people directly every day." The logistics of the course make it ideal for non- traditional college students. Because all lectures and notes and exams are available online, students can work at their convenience, and progress at their own pace. Other people interested in the course might include K- 12 teachers seeking continuing education credits, and high school seniors who want to get a head start on their college course credits. People interested in enrolling in one of the courses should contact the Office of Academic Enrollment and Services at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( 394- 2400), or the enrollment office of their local South Dakota university. Early registration for the fall semester will be ongoing from April 12- 16. Additional information regarding the courses are available from the Geology and Geological Engineering Dept. office at 394- 2461 or by contacting Dr. Price at 605- 394- 1290. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0499/ Geology on the Internet) |
