St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 8, 1999) SDSM& T CONCRETE CANOE TEAM TO COMPETE IN REGIONAL ASCE CONFERENCE AT COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES IN GOLDEN, CO APRIL 9/ 10 SDSM& T students will be racing their new concrete canoe, nicknamed " Chameleon", this weekend during the 1999 Rocky Mountain Regional Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE). The conference is being held at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO April 9- 10 and will feature concrete canoe races and steel bridge competitions. " The team has put in many hours of labor to create an amazing canoe, " said Kristin Hensley, ASCE President. " Everyone has helped in many different aspects including the display, the steel bridge, presentations, and the canoe. The team hopes that the hard work and many efforts will pay off in Golden at the competition." SDSM& T's student ASCE chapter has a strong tradition of designing and racing concrete canoes. SDSM& T has placed first in nine of the past eleven regional competitions and has finished in the top five in nationals three times. South Dakota Tech won the National Concrete Canoe Competition in 1995 and was selected to host the national competition last summer where they came in 7th place overall out of 21 universities. The paddlers for SDSM& T's " Chameleon" canoe and their hometowns are Rhaub Walker, Rapid City; Jessica Gould, Rapid City; Crissy Shear, Belle Fourche; Emily Schaffer, Aberdeen; Josh Sletten, Irene; Jed Brich, Ogallala, NE; and Ryan Koontz, Rapid City. Canoe co- chairs are Richard Anderson, Rapid City; and Josh Warren, Sheridan WY. Jessica Gould and Rhaub Walker are in charge of the display. Shane Boyle of Rapid City and Jessica Gould will give the technical and non- technical presentations respectively. Steel bridge co- chairs are Shane Boyle and Mike Towey of Rapid City. Kristin Hensley of Toston MT is president of the SDSM& T Student ASCE Chapter and Dr. Scott Kenner, Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering ( CEE) serves as faculty advisor.
