Dr. Richard Gowen, president of SDSM& T, presented him with the award during the 48th Annual SDSM& T Honors Convocation held March 30. Sawyer, who recently was appointed SDSM& T Director of Career Planning, Placement and Cooperative Education, is the son of the late Richard and Dorothy Sawyer of Howard. A graduate of Howard High School, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in history from the University of South Dakota. He served as a member of former U. S. Senator Larry Pressler's staff for almost eighteen years, including three years as state director. Since 1997 he has been Public Information Manager in the SDSM& T University & Public Relations Office until his recent appointment as Career Planning and Placement Director. Sawyer recently served as chairman of the Rapid City Rotary Club's Storybook Island Christmas Lighting Program that more than 21, 000 children and adults from the community experienced. Over 200, 000 lights illuminated 85 decorated sets at Storybook Island over the holiday season. The project not only raised $ 35, 000 for Storybook Island, but also collected 2, 375 pounds of food for the Black Hills Regional Food Bank. He is also involved in several other community organizations. The Virginia Simpson Award was established by Mrs. Simpson, a long- time supporter of South Dakota Tech and active community member, to help support and encourage new or continued involvement by SDSM& T faculty or staff with the Rapid City community. Darrell's wife, Karla ( Hoesing) of Yankton, teaches at Douglas High School near Ellsworth Air Force Base. They have two children-- Jill, a senior majoring in medical technology at USD; and Matthew, a senior at Rapid City Stevens High School. ++ 30++ ( i:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 0499\ Honors Convocation Howard)
