St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( March 24, 1999) STURGIS STUDENTS WIN HONORS AT HIGH PLAINS REGIONAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR Three students from Sturgis Williams Middle School and Sturgis Brown High School won honors at the 44th Annual High Plains Regional Science & Engineering Fair held recently on the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). Samantha Michalson of Sturgis Middle School won 2nd Place/ 8th Grade- Biology for her science project entitled " Can One's Resting Heartbeat be Changed by Music?" John Keefner and Mark Hanhardt of Sturgis Brown won 1st Place/ Senior Division, 1st Place/ International Science & Engineering Fair Award Winners and a National Council of Teachers of Mathematics award for their science project entitled " Zen and the Art of Diamagnetic Water Repulsion." Other students from Sturgis who competed in the event and their project titles are as follows: Name Project Matthew Hines and Jay Bestgen Can We Make a Generator to Run Out City? Sara Keffeler What Texture is your Soil? Amanda Heenan Which Detergent Makes the Most Bubbles? Tracy Davies Do Egg Substitutions Affect Volume? Stanton Schlecht Which Grain Germinates the Fastest? Erick Rodriguez and Jake Husman Does Gravity Effect a Projectile and Free Falling Object? Sarah Manby and Elizabeth Nettleton Does Water Depth Affect the Speed of Sound? Jay Bestgen Can We Make a Generator to Run Our City? The 44th Annual High Plains Regional Science & Engineering Fair featured 375 middle and high school students from 32 area schools competing in various science and engineering categories. A total of approximately $ 2, 650 in cash awards plus many additional prizes that included flags, books, backpacks, databanks, and medallions were awarded to the winners in the various categories. ++ 30++ Photo Caption: Samantha Michalson of Sturgis Middle School displays her science project entitled " Can One's Resting Heartbeat Be Changed by Music?"
