| Transcript | Isabel Dakotan Isabel Boy Member Solar Rolar Team in Sunrayce'95 Barren Hepper of rural Isabel is a member of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Solar Rolar Motion Team that entered competition in Sunrayce 95 Tuesday, June 20th. The 13-member team is racing Solar Rolar, a sun-powered vehicle designed, built and tested by the SD-SM&T students. The team started tenth in the line-up, placing them higher than any other rookie team. Starting positions were determined by qualifying race rounds. Sponsored by the Department of Energy, the 10-day race started June 20 in Indianapolis and will end 1, 100 miles later Jn Golden, . Colorado. One day is scheduled for recharging in Kansas City, Missouri. Tim Gross of Huron will take the first turn at the wheel driving 70 miles to Terra Haute, Indiana. After a test from Water-town to Rapid City in early June, the team is confident that the vehicle will fair well during competition. During the trial-run, the vehicle, powered by photovaltaic cells that convert sunlight to electrical energy, hit a top speed of 66 miles per hour on the highway. If the team places among the top three in Sunrayce 95, they will be invited to represent SDSM&T in the International Sunrayce to be held in Australia. Team members include Project Leader Chris ScoJton of Rapid City and Race Manager Ragnar Toen-nessen of Norway. Drivers include Scolton, Gross, Mike James of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Chris Hinders of Rapid City, Other team members include Paul Winckler of Newell; Chad Travnicek of Gregory; Zachary Spencer of Lincoln, Nebraska; Edward Schmitz of Rapid City, Ali-Kare Riisnaes of Norway; Roxanne Miller of Rapid City; Ardell Ochsner of Kaylor; and Hepper of Isabel. Or. Dan Gerttae, Tech assistant professor in mechanical engineering, served as faculty advisor. Dr, James Schmitendorf, assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering, advised on weather. Sunday, the SD entry was still looking pretty good but Monday ft had to be to*ed 150 miles to Smith Centef, /Kansas and for this drew a penalty\of 7Yi hours on top of an automatic 8'/i hours course time. As of Monday, Massachusetts Institute of Technology was leading the race, George Washington was second and Minnesota third. The race is scheduled to end about mid-week. |
