St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 16, 1999) SDSM& T'S 3RD ANNUAL SENIOR DESIGN FAIR TO FEATURE OVER 50 STUDENT PROJECTS SDSM& T's 3rd Annual Senior Design Fair will feature over 50 senior capstone projects from the various fields of engineering and computer science. The event will be held Tuesday, April 20, from 9: 00 am- 4: 00 pm in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. The design fair is free and open to the general public. SDSM& T's campus- wide demonstration of the design method showcases senior capstone projects from students in the departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Geological Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining Engineering. Private industry and government agencies have provided external funding for some of the student projects. A sample of the projects to be displayed includes the following: Fire Fighting Robot, Paintball Velocity Meter, Xact Firing System, Sky High Defroster, Gas Bazooka, Rock Retriever, Mini- Baja vehicle, Mini- Indy race car, Virtual Mine demonstration, Solar Car Cruise Control, Lloyd's Robot Retriever, Extraction of Copper from Steel Manufactured using Recycled Scrap, Human Powered Vehicle, Slackers Freeware, Advanced Realtime Power Controller, Greenhouse Environment Control, Particle Separation Technology, Corn Loft, Hydro- Motion, and Shear Energy. Other student projects include design of a Bicycle Frame using Advanced Composites, Automated Jewelry Manufacturing Center, MTBE Plant, Toluene Disproportionation Plant, Vinyl Acetate Plant, Velocity Acquisition System for a Wind Tunnel, Solar Powered Community, Siting of a Wind Farm for Rapid City, Stability Analysis of Railroad Tunnel near Whitewood, Sediment Concentration in the Bad River near Ft. Pierre, Remediation of Nitrate Concentration at a Black Hills Mine, Belle Eldridge Abandoned Mine Cleanup, and Environmental Reclamation Plan for the Diane- A Uranium Mine. " The design method is an essential part of technology in which the creative process is used to develop a product or process to address an identified need, " says Dr. Christopher Jenkins, SDSM& T Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Coordinator of the Senior Design Fair. " This event provides an excellent opportunity for the general public, particularly junior high and senior high school students, to see the results when South Dakota Tech students apply the creative process in engineering and science projects." -- more— -- Page 2 – Understanding and utilizing the design method are important components of engineering and computer science education.
