LIPKIE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND THAT WILL PROVIDE $ 5000 AND $ 2000 SCHOLARSHIPS ANNUALLY SDSM& T alumnus Daniel Lipkie ( Math ' 68) has gifted scholarship funds annually to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) since 1982, awarding approximately 52 scholarships to date. Dr. Lipkie has now permanently established the Daniel E. Lipkie Science Scholarship Fund at SDSM& T, which will result in scholarships being offered annually in the amounts of $ 5, 000 and $ 2, 000 commencing in the 1999- 2000 academic year. The scholarships are earmarked for incoming freshmen or returning students at SDSM& T who are majoring in computer science, mathematics, chemistry or physics. The fund's purpose is to provide significant merit scholarship support for science students at SDSM& T. Yearly earnings of the scholarship fund will be used to award as many $ 5, 000 scholarships as possible. " The permanent establishment of this scholarship fund demonstrates Dr. Lipkie's leadership and commitment to providing quality education and qualifies him as a National Co- Chair in our first- ever capital campaign Vision 2000, " said Rod Pappel, President of the SDSM& T Foundation. A native of Scotland, SD, Daniel Lipkie graduated from SDSM& T in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. Following graduation, he entered the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as an officer and worked in computer operations for several years. In 1971 he earned a Master of Science degree in Astrophysics and Space Science from Rice University. After receiving a Ph. D. degree in computer science from the University of Washington in 1979, Lipkie worked for Xerox Corporation as a software developer and manager. He currently works as senior software engineer for Netpodium Inc., where he designed and implemented in Java the user interface for a web browser- based Internet Interactive Broadcasting system. " I'm merely following the spirit of Homer Surbeck whose scholarship got me started at the Mines, " stated Dr. Lipkie in describing his reason for establishing the scholarships.
