LIPKIE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND THAT WILL PROVIDE $ 5000 AND $ 2000 SCHOLARSHIPS ANNUALLY AT SDSM& T Scotland native and SDSM& T alumnus Daniel Lipkie ( Math ' 68) has gifted scholarship funds annually to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) since 1982, awarding approximately 52 scholarships to date. Dr. Lipkie has now permanently established the Daniel E. Lipkie Science Scholarship Fund at SDSM& T, which will result in scholarships being offered annually in the amounts of $ 5, 000 and $ 2, 000 commencing in the 1999- 2000 academic year. The scholarships are earmarked for incoming freshmen or returning students at SDSM& T who are majoring in computer science, mathematics, chemistry or physics. The fund's purpose is to provide significant merit scholarship support for science students at SDSM& T. Yearly earnings of the scholarship fund will be used to award as many $ 5, 000 scholarships as possible. " The permanent establishment of this scholarship fund demonstrates Dr. Lipkie's leadership and commitment to providing quality education and qualifies him as a National Co- Chair in our first- ever capital campaign Vision 2000, " said Rod Pappel, President of the SDSM& T Foundation. Daniel and his brother, Curtis, Lipkie both earned Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics in 1968 and 1974 respectively from SDSM& T. After graduation, Daniel entered the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as an officer and worked in computer operations for several years. In 1971 he earned a Master of Science degree in Astrophysics and Space Science from Rice University. After receiving a Ph. D. degree in computer science from the University of Washington in 1979, Lipkie worked for Xerox Corporation as a software developer and manager. He implemented an integrated graphics/ text editor for the Xerox Star 8010 Workstation, which was the first commercially available office information system to use bitmap graphics, menus and a mouse. Lipkie worked for Microsoft from 1983 to 1998 as software development manager. His responsibilities at Microsoft included manager of the MS Word text editor group, member of the MS Windows design team for prototype of mouseless user interface, manager of the assembler language group, and serving on the staff to Bill Gates for special projects. As senior software engineer for BioScan from 1991 to 1992, Lipkie wrote software for -- more-- -- Page 2-- an image measurement and analysis system. Serving as principal engineer for ElseWare Corporation, he designed and implemented a hinting subsystem for synthetic font generation system, Infinifont, embedded in Hewlett- Packard printers. He was awarded a patent for developing a " Method and system for creating, specifying and generating parametric fonts." After ElseWare was purchased by Hewlett- Packard in 1995, Lipkie worked a member of the Hewlett- Packard team that conducted emerging technology investigations involving internet and Java. In 1997 Dr. Lipkie organized the Seattle Java Users Group. As senior software architect for Active Voice from 1997 to 1998, he was part of a design team for a next generation call- processing system. He currently works as senior software engineer for Netpodium Inc., where he designed and implemented in Java the user interface for a web browser- based Internet Interactive Broadcasting system. " I'm merely following the spirit of Homer Surbeck whose scholarship got me started at the Mines, " stated Dr. Lipkie in describing his reason for establishing the scholarships. " Hopefully in the future there may be a second generation of Surbeck' Scholarships." ++ 30++ ( i:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 0399\ Lipkie Scholarship Scotland fax\ stwd)
