St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 18, 1999) SDSM& T TO CELEBRATE 22ND NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK FEBRUARY 21- 27 SDSM& T has scheduled a wide variety of special activities and programs to celebrate the 22nd Annual National Engineers Week. Rapid City Mayor Jim Shaw has proclaimed February 21- 27, 1999, as Engineers Week in Rapid City. The campus will kick off its Engineers Week activities on Friday, February 19, with the Bridge Strength Testing of cardboard bridges built by area junior and senior high school students. Testing of the approximately 300 cardboard bridges will begin at 2: 15 p. m. in Room 210 of the Civil/ Mechanical Building and will continue throughout Engineers Week. On Saturday, February 20, elementary students will build engineering projects with interlocking blocks. The Kid's Block Contest will be held at 10: 00 a. m. in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. The event is sponsored by the Black Hills Chapter of the National Association of Women In Construction ( NAWIC) and will be judged by NAWIC, local contractors and SDSM& T students. Psychologist Dr. Ray Hyman will be the featured speaker Engineers Week Colloquium Speaker on Monday, February 22. Dr. Hyman, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Oregon, will present programs entitled " How Smart People Go Wrong" and " How We Are Fooled" at 3: 00 and 7: 00 p. m. respectively in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. His multi- media presentations interspersed with humor are sponsored by the local chapter and national office of Sigma Xi, a scientific research society, and SDSM& T. A panel presentation entitled " Ask an Engineer" will be the program for the United Campus Ministry Forum held on Tuesday, February 23, from 11: 30 a. m. to 1: 00 p. m. in the Surbeck Center Bump Lounge. An engineer from the Black Hills Chapter of the South Dakota Engineering Society will serve as facilitator for the panel of practicing engineers and alumni in responding to questions submitted by SDSM& T students. Student teams will compete later that afternoon in the Rube Goldberg Contest from 3: 00 5: 00 p. m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. " Set a tee and tee up a golf ball ( the golf ball must be freestanding on the tee)" is the theme for the 1999 Rube Goldberg Local Machine Contest. The " Anything Goes" contest, in which SDSM& T students design outrageous contests for other SDSM& T students, will be held on Wednesday, February 24, from 4: 00- 6: 00 p. m. On Thursday, February 25, Mayor Jim Shaw will read his Engineers Week Proclamation at a luncheon program to honor SDSM& T's 1999 Outstanding Recent Graduates and to initiate new members into the Order of the Engineer. The program begins at 11: 00 a. m. followed by lunch in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. The campus will be busy hosting over 1300 area students from middle, junior and senior high schools in the region on Friday, February 26. " The Miracles of Chemistry" demonstrations will be presented by SDSM& T chemistry students, with the assistance of Professors David Boyles and Steve McDowell, at 9: 00, 10: 00 and 11: 00 a. m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. The visiting students will be provided the opportunity for sack lunches with college students in various departments and also will tour departmental experiments/ displays that afternoon. At 3: 00 p. m. high school and SDSM& T students can compete in the " Junior/ Senior Grubby Number One" Contest that will be held in the Surbeck Center Snack Bar. Trophies will be presented to the high school and the SDSM& T students who win the respective contests. -- more-- -- Page 2-- Robert Krause, PE, will speak on " The New Virtual Career" at the Annual Engineers Week Banquet beginning at 6: 00 p. m., Friday, February 26, in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. He is sponsored by SDSM& T's Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers ( IEEE) Student Chapter and the Black Hills Chapter of the South Dakota Engineering Society. Engineers Week concludes on Saturday, February 27, with the Computer Programming Contest for high school students, which will take place from 9: 30 a. m. - 3: 30 p. m. in the Electrical/ Physics Building, Room 342. West river 7th and 8th graders will compete in the Mathcounts competition at 1: 00 p. m. Saturday afternoon. The contest is sponsored by the Black Hills Chapter of the South Dakota Engineering Society. The public is welcome to attend any of the Engineers Week programs at SDSM& T. There is no charge for any of the activities except the Thursday luncheon and Friday banquet events for which reservations are required.
