St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 5, 1999) DEVEREAUX FILM SERIES FEATURES GIANT - JAMES DEAN'S FINAL FILM Giant, which stars James Dean in his third and final movie, will be shown this Sunday evening as the fifth film in the SDSM& T Devereaux Library's 1999 Nostalgia Night Series. The 1956 blockbuster stars Rock Hudson, 23- year- old Elizabeth Taylor, and 24- year- old James Dean. Appearing in supporting roles are Carroll Baker, Mercedes McCambridge, Sal Mineo, Earl Holliman, and Dennis Hopper. Directed by Hollywood legend George Stevens, the film was shot on location in Texas. Giant is considered Rock Hudson's best performance, for which he received his only Academy Award nomination. The film received 10 Academy Award nominations: Best Picture; Best Actor Dean; Best Actor Hudson; Best Screenplay; Best Score; Best Supporting Actress McCambridge; Best Costume Design; Best Art Direction; Best Director; and Best Editing. George Stevens won the Oscar for Best Director. James Dean died before filming of the movie was completed. His other two films were East of Eden and Rebel Without A Cause. The showing of the movie begins at 6: 00 pm in the Elks Theatre and is sponsored by United Corporation and TSP.
