St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 17, 1999) SDSM& T TO HOST 35TH ANNUAL CONCRETE CONFERENCE MARCH 5 The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will host the 35th Annual Concrete Conference on Friday, March 5, 1999, from 8: 00 a. m. to 5: 00 p. m. in the Electrical Engineering/ Physics Building, Room 252. The theme of this year's conference is " Concrete- Back to Basics". Conference speakers and their presentation topics include the following: Luke Snell, Professor & Chairman of Construction, Southern Illinois University, " Acceptance Testing of Concrete"; Steve Kosmatka, Director of Construction Information Services for the Portland Cement Association and editor of Concrete Technology Today, " Cement and Aggregates" and " Mixture Proportioning" ( two presentations); Ed Duke, SDSM& T Director of Engineering & Mining Experiment Station and Associate Professor of Geology, " SEM Studies of Hardened Concrete"; Terry Collins, SDSM& T civil & environmental engineering graduate student, " Recycled Glass Flowable Fill"; Bill Rossi, Western Division Technical Service Manager, Dacotah Cement, " How to Transport, Place, Finish and Cure Concrete"; Jim Meyer, W. R. Grace's Engineering Services Group, " Basics of Admixtures"; David Henson, Southern Divisional Sales Manager and Director of Engineering Services Group, Master Builders, Inc., " Admixtures for Economy and Performance"; Jim Pierce, Technical Service Center Leadership Team, Bureau of Reclamation, " Back to Basics- Case Studies"; and Peter Tatnall, Director of Underground Construction, Fiber Reinforced Concrete Division, Synthetic Industries, Marietta GA, " Fibers in Concrete – The Basics". " This conference has been very successful for many years because we have top- notch speakers who provide practical, useful, and up to date information on concrete technology, " said Dr. M. R. Hansen, SDSM& T Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, who will serve as moderator. Sponsors of the conference include SDSM& T's Civil & Environmental Engineering Dept.; SDSM& T's ASCE Student Chapter; Dakota Chapter of the American Concrete Institute; Dacotah Cement; Hills Materials Company; Birdsall Sand & Gravel; Kost Brothers; and Sweetman Construction. The registration fee is $ 75 if received by February 26 or $ 85 after that date. Students and retirees may attend for $ 10, which includes the cost of breaks and lunch.
