St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 BOR SUMMARY FEBRUARY 26, 1999 WHEELER MANUFACTURING COMPANY ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP AT SDSM& T Rob and Brad Wheeler of Wheeler Manufacturing Company in Lemmon have announced the establishment of a scholarship fund at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) that will provide an incoming freshman student with a $ 2, 000 scholarship. The first scholarship from the newly created fund will be awarded to a student entering SDSM& T in the fall of 1999 and will be payable over two years. First preference for the scholarship will be given to an incoming freshman who either has been employed by Wheeler Manufacturing Company or whose parents are currently employees of the company. The second and subsequent preferences will be given in the following order— an incoming freshman from the Lemmon community; a freshman applicant from northwestern South Dakota; and an entering student from western South Dakota. The SDSM& T Scholarship Committee will select the recipients and award the scholarships in accordance with these guidelines. SDSM& T GRADUATE STUDENT RECEIVES $ 7, 000 RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP FROM MASTER BUILDERS, INC. Terry Collins of Rapid City, a Civil Engineering graduate student at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, has been awarded a $ 7, 000 research fellowship by Master Builders, Inc. to support his experimental thesis in concrete. Collins, who has 23 years of experience in the concrete industry, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from SDSM& T last May and is now pursuing a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Collins will use the fellowship to continue research at SDSM& T on using recycled glass in concrete and in developing flowable fill for utility lines. SCHOLARSHIP FUND ESTABLISHED AT SDSM& T FOR MOBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES Steve ( CE' 75) and Terry Newlin have established The Aldeen and Esther Ochsner Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor Terry's parents. This memorial scholarship is to be awarded to an incoming freshman engineering student at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T), with first preference to an incoming freshman who has graduated from Mobridge High School. Additionally, the donors believe that preference for students who have participated in high school athletics be given priority when other attributes are comparable. The amount of the award shall initially be a minimum of $ 750. As subsequent gifts are to be added to the principal, it is the donors' intent that the principal will grow to an amount that would provide a $ 1, 000 scholarship. It is the intent of Steve and Terry Nowlin that their gifts will be matched by Nalco Chemical Company. SDSM& T HOSTS 1300 STUDENTS FROM 25 SCHOOLS FOR " MIRACLES OF CHEMISTRY" DEMONSTRATIONS Approximately 1300 middle, junior and senior high school students from 25 schools in the region will be on the SDSM& T campus this Friday to attend the " Miracles of Chemistry" demonstrations that will be presented by SDSM& T chemistry students. The programs will be given in the Surbeck Center Ballroom at 9: 00, 10: 00 and 11: 00 am. The programs are being offered to area students during the campus celebration of Engineers Week and also as part of SDSM& T's outreach efforts to K- 12 students. Due to the tremendous interest expressed in this program, SDSM& T officials added two more sessions in order to accommodate all of the schools that had expressed an interest in participating. Students from 25 schools in 19 communities in western South Dakota ( Belle Fourche, Douglas, Faith, Hill City, Isabel, Kadoka, Kyle, Mission, Nemo, Philip, Rapid City, Ridgeview, Spearfish, Sturgis, and Takini); northwestern Nebraska ( Alliance, Cody and Chadron); and eastern Wyoming ( Newcastle). The " Miracles of Chemistry��� demonstrations will be presented by SDSM& T students who developed the projects as part of their Chem Outreach class. This new course at SDSM& T is an integrated class of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors working collectively and with each other. Coordinators are Dr. David Boyles, Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Steve McDowell, Chair of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering and Assoc. Professor of Chemistry. SDSM& T MASTER CHORALE TO PRESENT CONCERTS IN ISRAEL / WILL JOIN UNITED CAMPUS MINISTRY GROUP IN SERVICE WORK TOUR OF ISRAEL OVER SPRING BREAK The Master Chorale at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) leave this Saturday, February 27, for a two- week concert tour of Israel. The SDSM& T students will be presenting concerts in Galilee, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem. Dr. Susan L. Reid, Director of Music, Director of Choral Activities, will conduct the concerts presented by SDSM& T's Master Chorale, which is an auditioned vocal ensemble. Following their concerts, the Master Chorale will join a group of SDSM& T United Campus Ministry students and community members who are leaving March 4th to spend their spring break touring Israel, learning about the region's religious and cultural heritage, and doing service work. They will be visiting the Sea of Galilee, Mount Carmel, Nazareth, Sepphoris, Jordan River, Wadi Hamman, Jordan Valley, Jericho, Qumran, and Jerusalem. The group will be working at a YMCA or Hope School in Bethlehem or Nazareth. Each night native speakers will share religious and cultural information about the area. SDSM& T SELECTED FOR MOTOROLA MENTOR PROGRAM TO SUPPORT EDUCATION OF NATIVE AMERICAN ENGINEERS Motorola Company officials recently selected the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) as one of three universities nationwide for the Motorola Mentor Program. The program is designed to partner with targeted universities to support the education and professional development of minority engineering students and increase the available talent pool of qualified minority technical graduates. The partnership includes a $ 3000 award to SDSM& T, of which $ 1, 000 is earmarked for a research project by Bob Whipple, an SDSM& T civil engineering major from Porcupine with Lakota and Navajo ancestry. The Motorola Mentor Program at SDSM& T will help support three SDSM& T Native American students at the sophomore level or higher who are interested in pursuing careers in industrial, mechanical or electrical engineering. In cooperation with the Minorities In Engineering program at Oglala Lakota College ( OLC), the program also will provide a stipend this summer for an OLC student in the MIE to work with a mentor at Motorola. SDSM& T TO HONOR WINNERS OF 1999 OUTSTANDING RECENT GRADUATE AWARD Five alumni of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) will be honored as recipients of the 1999 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award during an Engineers Week luncheon on Thursday, February 25, in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. SDSM& T officials established the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award to recognize alumni for their professional achievements and civic involvement within ten years of graduation. The winners of the 1999 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in the various engineering fields are as follows: Electrical and Computer Engineering - Scott J. Bracken; Metallurgical Engineering- Boyd J. Eisenbraun; Civil and Environmental Engineering - Renita M. Mollman; Chemical Engineering - Karen Nelson Swindler; and Geological Engineering - Ralph L. " Randy" Taylor, Jr. PSYCHOLOGIST TO PRESENT PROGRAMS ON " HOW SMART PEOPLE GO WRONG" AND " HOW WE ARE FOOLED" DURING SDSM& T ENGINEERS WEEK Noted psychologist Dr. Ray Hyman will be the guest speaker at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) on Monday, February 22, as part of SDSM& T's Engineers Week activities. He will present a program entitled " How Smart People Go Wrong" at 3: 00 p. m and another entitled " How We Are Fooled" at 7: 00 p. m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. The public is invited to his multi- media presentations at no charge. His appearances are co- sponsored by the local chapter and national office of Sigma Xi, a scientific research society, and the SDSM& T. Dr. Hyman is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Oregon. He has served on a variety of governmental committees and has done editorial work for many major psychological journals as well as Nature, Science, and other general scientific magazines. He frequently appears on television shows, with recent appearances including Larry King Live, ABC's 20/ 20, Nightly News with Dan Rather, Scientific American Frontiers, and Nova. OVER 40 ORGANIZATIONS PARTICIPATE IN SDSM& T " MATTERS OF THE HEART: A HEALTH & WELLNESS EXPO" FEBRUARY 11TH / SDSM& T's " Matters of the Heart: A Health & Wellness Expo" will be held Thursday, February 11, from 11: 00 am to 2: 00 pm in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. Over forty community and campus organizations are scheduled to participate in providing health screenings and wellness information to faculty, students, staff and the general public. Activities include free massages, healthy snacks, purified water, fortune- telling, yoga demonstrations, arm wrestling contests, and family planning information. Participating community groups include the American Cancer Society, Rapid City Regional Hospital, American Red Cross, Positive Approach, Working Against Violence and many more. Campus groups including fraternities, sororities, TONITE, Athletics, SADD, and Residence Life will also have display tables, contests and door prizes. USD, SDSU, and Health Services nurses and nursing students will provide check- ups. GRADUATE STUDENTS ESTABLISH FELLOWSHIPS FOR SDSM& T INDIA STUDENTS Two graduate students from India at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) have let little time pass before giving back to their alma mater. Rajesh Namile and Sudhir Muthyalapati, who are natives of India, recently established fellowships in their names to provide annual support to SDSM& T graduate students from India. Less than two months after receiving his Master's degree in Computer Science from SDSM& T, Namile made a commitment to provide a $ 500 annual fellowship to the graduate students from India with the highest academic achievement in computer science. Muthyalapati, who will be a candidate for a Master's degree in electrical engineering at SDSM& T's spring commencement this May, has established a fellowship in the amount of $ 200 to be awarded annually to the graduate student from India who has the highest academic achievement in electrical engineering. |
