St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 22, 1999) SDSM& T TO HONOR WINNERS OF 1999 OUTSTANDING RECENT GRADUATE AWARD Five alumni of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) will be honored as recipients of the 1999 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award during an Engineers Week luncheon on Thursday, February 25, in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. SDSM& T officials established the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award to recognize alumni for their professional achievements and civic involvement within ten years of graduation. The winners of the 1999 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in the various engineering fields are as follows: Electrical and Computer Engineering - Scott J. Bracken graduated from SDSM& T with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1988. He started his career at Rockwell- Collins Commercial Avionics and developed several test plans for new Boeing 777 avionics products. The DFT guidelines that he published were recognized within the company as the standard for avionics designs resulting in the receipt of Rockwell's highest engineering honor. He then took these skills into the high volume consumer electronics business at Hewlett- Packard's ink jet printer products division. The DFM guidelines that he developed are now used for all new printer products in the division. He was named the lead engineer responsible for the cross- functional R& D/ Manufacturing team that was introducing the product that is the highest volume product in the division. His leadership in the creation of the SPARK program in Iowa is his most notable volunteer achievement. Bracken is a 1984 graduate of Custer High School. His parents, Nob and Judy Schoenfelder, live in Rapid City. Metallurgical Engineering- Boyd J. Eisenbraun, who was born and raised in McLaughlin, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1988. After initially accepting an entry- level position with Climax Molybdenum Company, he has been awarded consistently more responsible technical positions. Currently Plant Superintendent for Eveleth Mines, he has direct supervisory authority of 156 employees and manages an annual budget of $ 84 million. In 1994 he received the Sentinels of Safety Award as team leader for the safest surface mine in the USA. In addition, he has been a leader in cost reduction and environmental remediation strategies with every operation in which he has been involved. Along with his outstanding professional development, he has volunteered for many community activities, in particular, focusing his attention on activities and organizations that contribute to sound development and enjoyment of natural resources. Civil and Environmental Engineering - Renita M. Mollman, who was born in Deadwood and graduated from Lead High School, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from SDSM& T in 1988. After graduation, she accepted an entry- level position with Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City, MO and since has advanced to the position of Civil -- more-- -- Page 2-- Engineering Department Manager/ Project Manager. She is specializing in pavement and airfield pavement design. The several professional awards she has received include the NASA- Edwards Air Force Base Award for Outstanding Service and Support and the Missouri Young Engineer of the Month. She has published papers and is actively involved in and has served as officer in several professional society organizations. Her civic activities include Habitat for Humanity and Girls to Women. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Missouri, Illinois, Nevada, South Carolina, Georgia and Maryland. Her parents live in Whitewood. Chemical Engineering - Karen Nelson Swindler, a graduate of Redfield High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from SDSM& T in 1988. She worked for Exxon in Baytown, TX for three years and for Equistar Chemicals, LP in Clinton, IA the past seven years. At Equistar ( the second largest ethylene manufacturer in the world), she has been a production engineer, assistant superintendent of utilities, superintendent of the ethylene unit, and manager of olefins for the Clinton complex. She is also the Olefins Best Practice Team Chair, a committee of all the Olefins Managers in the Equistar Company. In addition to her career achievements, she has been very involved in community and church activities. She has been given various leadership and volunteer awards. Geological Engineering - Ralph L. " Randy" Taylor, Jr. graduated from SDSM& T in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering. Since his graduation, he has held increasing levels of responsibility with Taylor Drilling Company and has been President of the company since 1995. He has contributed substantially to the success of his company and has been responsible for the development and contracting of more than $ 10 million in revenues. He has effectively led the marketing and technical development of major well- drilling projects, including water supply wells for Rapid City and Spearfish. He also has donated substantial amounts of his time to Lifewater International, an organization that is dedicated to bringing clean drinking water to the rural poor around the world. A graduate of Rapid City Stevens High School, he is an outstanding example of entrepreneurial effort and is a role model for graduates who wish to succeed and who desire to remain in South Dakota. His parents, Ralph and Merideth Taylor, live in Rapid City. The luncheon costs $ 7.50 and is open to the public.
