St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 26, 1999) REDFIELD NATIVE HONORED AS 1999 SDSM& T OUTSTANDING RECENT GRADUATE IN CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) recently honored Karen Nelson Swindler as the 1999 SDSM& T Outstanding Recent Graduate in Chemical Engineering. A graduate of Redfield High School, Karen Nelson Swindler received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from SDSM& T in 1988. After graduating from SDSM& T, she worked for Exxon in Baytown, TX for three years. For the past seven years she has worked for Equistar Chemicals, LP in Clinton, IA. At Equistar ( the second largest ethylene manufacturer in the world), she has been a production engineer, assistant superintendent of utilities, superintendent of the ethylene unit, and manager of olefins for the Clinton complex. She is also the Olefins Best Practice Team Chair, a committee of all the Olefins Managers in the Equistar Company. In addition to her career achievements, Karen Nelson Swindler has been very involved in community and church activities. She has been given various leadership and volunteer awards. Her husband, Richard Swindler ( BS EE ' 88), also is an alumnus of SDSM& T. They have four children Kara, Dustin, Brandon, and Nelson. Karen and four alumni in other engineering fields were honored as Outstanding Recent Graduates during an Engineers Week luncheon on Thursday, February 25.
