St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 29, 2000) YANKTON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE HONORED AS 2000 SDSM& T OUTSTANDING RECENT GRADUATE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) recently honored Dean M. Harts as the2000 SDSM& T Outstanding Recent Graduate in Chemical Engineering. Harts, a graduate of Yankton Senior High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from SDSM& T in 1988. Harts has worked for 3M since graduation and is now attending law school pursuing a new career in Intellectual Property Law. In his various positions with 3M, he has earned several prestigious awards including three Golden Step Awards and two consecutive Circle of Technical Excellence nominations. He was the inventor of three concepts, two of which were authorized for patent filing. He also received first place on a paper for the International Association of Defense Counsel 1999 Legal Writing Contest. The article appeared in the October 1999 Defense Counsel Journal. Harts and alumni in four other engineering fields were honored as Outstanding Recent Graduates during a recent Engineers Week luncheon on the South Dakota Tech campus. The Outstanding Recent Graduate Program honors graduates who have achieved exemplary career progress and recognition within ten years of their graduation. The program was originated and is sponsored by the SDSM& T Alumni Association and the SDSM& T Foundation.
