St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( February 29, 2000) MENO PARK RESIDENT HONORED AS 2000 SDSM& T OUTSTANDING RECENT GRADUATE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) recently honored Brian Pelton as the2000 SDSM& T Outstanding Recent Graduate in Metallurgical Engineering. Pelton currently is a materials research and development scientist in the stent business unit for Guidant Corporation. After graduating from SDSM& T in 1989 Pelton went on to earn his Master of Engineering Degree from Lehigh University in 1990. Today he is recognized as a national expert in the use of shape memory alloys for biomedical applications. Guidant grosses approximately $ 1.3 billion annually, and the stent business unit accounts for approximately 70% of the company's overall gross income. Mr. Pelton has led the effort to supply this division with " just in time" research, helping to drive down on- hand inventory and backorders, as well as producing rapid solutions for product development problems. Mr. Pelton has also published 11 technical papers and has filed four inventions for patents. With respect to community service, Mr. Pelton has served in the United Way, Junior Achievement, and as a volunteer coach in youth soccer Harts and alumni in four other engineering fields were honored as Outstanding Recent Graduates during a recent Engineers Week luncheon on the South Dakota Tech campus. The Outstanding Recent Graduate Program honors graduates who have achieved exemplary career progress and recognition within ten years of their graduation. The program was originated and is sponsored by the SDSM& T Alumni Association and the SDSM& T Foundation.
