St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( November 13, 1997) SDSM& T PRESIDENT DR. RICHARD GOWEN LEADS NORTH CENTRAL ACCREDITATION TEAM FOR UNIVERSITY OF AKRON Dr. Richard J. Gowen, President of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T), recently was tapped by North Central Accreditation ( NCA) officials to lead the NCA accreditation site visit to the University of Akron. Dr. Gowen has been leading NCA teams for several years. The University of Akron, with an enrollment of 25, 000 students, is comparable in size to the combined student enrollment of all six universities in the South Dakota public higher education system. Dr. Gowen's selection by NCA to lead the accreditation of one of the 50 largest universities in the nation is helpful to South Dakota higher education officials in keeping abreast of national accreditation issues and standards. During its last accreditation review in 1996, SDSM& T received the longest accreditation period allowable under NCA guidelines. ++ 30++ ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ 1197\ Gowen NCA fax/ stwd)
