| Transcript | DRAFT ONLY President's Letter/ SDSM& T Quarterly Dear Friends, Welcome to the second issue of SDSM& T Quarterly! We received a very positive response to the magazine's inaugural issue this fall. We hope you enjoy this publication featuring some of the academic achievements and research accomplishments of our South Dakota Tech family. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has long held a deep commitment to furthering economic development in South Dakota. We take great pride in producing top- quality graduates who are prepared for the challenges and demands of the ever- changing workplace in this technological and complex society. In addition, our faculty and staff work closely with private business and industry; our local and state economic development officials; numerous governmental agencies; and our elected representatives to promote economic development and help create jobs in South Dakota. Over the years our faculty members have provided technical assistance and research expertise to many businesses in South Dakota. In the past few years alone, SDSM& T has assisted over #? businesses with product research and design projects. Many of these projects have resulted in businesses starting up in South Dakota or in creating additional jobs through expansion of their company. The creation of these jobs, many of which require various technical skills and expertise, provide an opportunity for some of our graduates to stay in South Dakota, pay taxes, raise their families, and be actively involved in our communities. Many Fortune 500 and high- tech companies throughout the nation recruit our students for internships and full- time, permanent positions upon graduation. Over 1, 900 of our graduates currently live in South Dakota and work in a diverse range of occupations and professions. Some are presidents or CEOs of companies that employ thousands of fellow South Dakotans. Others work in key positions in the private sector or numerous government agencies. In addition to their important economic development role, our alumni also contribute in countless ways to the quality of life in South Dakota through their community service and leadership in our schools, churches and civic organizations. A recent alumni survey we conducted for the Governor's Office of Economic Development indicated that a large percentage (%?) of our Tech alumni who currently live out- of- state would return to South Dakota if jobs were available in their fields. In cooperation with local and state economic development officials, we at SDSM& T are working with private industry to create new jobs in South Dakota and provide additional employment opportunities for our graduates. Through innovative curricular developments and cutting- edge research, we are preparing our SDSM& T students to meet the challenges and opportunities of the ever- changing global economy of the 21st century and new millenium. The Center for Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing and Production ( CAMP) is an exciting new program at Tech that can help business solve design/ manufacturing problems through enterprise teams and increase economic development opportunities with our industrial partners. With the new millenium fast approaching, we are building on SDSM& T's traditions of excellence to strengthen our educational programs, our industrial technical assistance, our research programs and our many economic development activities.
