Flint was recently honored by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) as a recipient of the newly established Distinguished Alumni Award during SDSM& T's winter commencement. Bob Flint ( MetE ' 37) received numerous awards, appointments and positions of responsibility throughout his career. After receiving his degree in metallurgical engineering from SDSM& T, Bob Flint went to work in 1937 for the US Steel Corporation ( USS) at the Gary ( IN) Sheet and Tin Works as an Industrial Engineer. In 1942 he became the Assistant Maintenance Engineer within the Engineering Department of USS Headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1944 he was transferred to the USS Industrial Engineering Division, Pittsburgh, PA, as Assistant Manager of Basic Standards. By 1952 he had been made Chief Industrial Engineer, Basic Standards, for all of USS. During this period Bob assembled a team of engineers and mathematicians to work on quantifying the various parameters involved in the operations of a blast furnace. A series of empirical formulae were developed which became known within the steel industry as the " Flint Formulae." The relationships were used not only in USS but by many blast furnace operators outside of USS. In 1964 he was made Chief Industrial Engineer Standards for all of USS. Upon retirement from USS in 1973 he became a management consultant for the Kennecott Copper Corporation. In 1975 he returned to USS as Director, Management Services, for United States Steel Engineers & Consultants ( UEC). In 1979 he again retired from USS but continued to work as an independent management consultant. Bob has been an active member of the American Iron & Steel Institute, the Association of Iron & Steel Engineers, and the American Institute of Mining & Metallurgical Engineers ( AIME). In 1974, Bob received the prestigious T. L. Joseph Award from the AIME for " distinguished contributions to iron- making operations." Nominees were evaluated based on four categories-- level of professional achievement; evidence of significant professional activity; involvement in professional or business organizations; and balance of community and professional service & awards. ++ 30++ ( I:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 0199\ Alumni Award Flint Pittsburgh) |
