St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( January 8, 1999) LEAD NATIVE RECEIVES SDSM& T DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Lead native James Christensen was recently honored by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) as a recipient of the newly established Distinguished Alumni Award during SDSM& T's winter commencement. Jim Christensen ( GenE ' 57) has received numerous awards, appointments and positions of responsibility throughout his career. After graduating from SDSM& T with a Bachelor of Science degree in general engineering, Jim worked for the Veterans Administration Engineering Division in Sturgis, SD. He advanced rapidly in the VA system with promotions to larger facilities in Fargo, ND; Salt Lake City, UT; and Portland, OR, as Chief Engineer. He was in the VA senior management development program in 1968 when he decided to work in private industry taking a job with Lennox Industries, Inc. in Portland as Technical Representative for the NW Division. In 1969 he joined the consulting firm of Dunham Associates as Executive Vice President. He assisted the company in growing to a national multi- office engineering company recognized by the Specifying Engineering Magazine as one of the top 20 firms in the U. S. He retired from Dunham Associates in 1993 as one of three senior partners. In 1994 he joined Lund Associates as General Manager and retired in 1997. Jim has been an active member of the Consulting Engineers Council of South Dakota and the SD Engineering Society. He has also been a long- time member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers ( ASHRAE) and was a member of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce for 25 years. Jim has been a strong supporter of SDSM& T, the Alumni Association, and the Foundation. He served as the Alumni Association Executive Vice President for six years and was Chairman of the 1990 SDSM& T Alumni Association all- school reunion. He was a founding member of the " Old Jocks Club" which is a group pledged to establish endowed athletic scholarships. He is a Hardrock Club member. He currently serves as chair of the SDSM& T Foundation investment committee. He is a co- chair for the Foundation Vision 2000 capital campaign. Nominees were evaluated based on four categories-- level of professional achievement; evidence of significant professional activity; involvement in professional or business organizations; and balance of community and professional service & awards.
