St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( May 15, 1997) SDSM& T MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY SPONSORING SEVERAL SUMMER FIELD DIGS The SDSM& T Museum of Geology is sponsoring several field paleontological digs this summer in the Black Hills area and along the Missouri River in which the public can participate on a limited, space- available basis. Officials from the SDSM& T Museum of Geology will be conducting scientific excavations for Jurassic Dinosaurs, Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs, giant marine turtles, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs and many other fossils at important paleontological sites in the region. The public is invited to register to participate in these exciting field digs sponsored by the SDSM& T Museum of Geology. Participants will be in small groups working closely with the involved scientists. Participation may also be taken for academic credit. Following is a description of the various field paleontology sessions being offered this summer by Tech's Museum of Geology: June 16 - 27: Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs and other vertebrates from Eastern Wyoming and southwest of the Black Hills. James Martin will lead the excavation to help gather important scientific data for the interval prior to the great extinction event. June 30 - July 11: Jurassic Dinosaurs and Mammals near Sundance, Wyoming. The " found" world of Camarasaurus and Allosaurus as well as tiny primitive mammals is the focus of this exciting locality. James Martin will conduct the session. July 14 - 26: Jurassic Dinosaurs and Mammals near Sundance, Wyoming. The second excavation session at this important paleontological site ( described above) also will be led by James Martin. August 4 - 15: Marine turtles, Mososaurs, and Plesiosaurs from the Late Cretaceous period. James Martin, David Parris and Gorden Bell will lead the excavations along the Missouri River near Chamberlain. This year's excavations will continue the important scientific discovery last summer by the SDSM& T Museum of Geology of an Archalon, a giant marine turtle, at a site near Chamberlain. August 18 - 29: Marine turtles, Mososaurs, and Plesiosaurs from the Late Cretaceous period. A follow up session to the earlier field excavation along the Missouri River described above. To register for the field paleontology sessions or obtain additional information, individuals should contact Dr. Philip Bjork, SDSM& T Museum of Geology, at 1- 800- 544- 8162, ext. 2467, or email ( pbjork@ msmailgw. sdsmt. edu). ++ 30++ ( Editor: If you are interested in doing an on- site story for any of these excavations, call Darrell Sawyer, SDSM& T Public Information Manager, at 605- 394- 6082 for directions to the excavation site and to make specific arrangements for your visit.)
