St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 SDSM& T HOSTS ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS FORUM ON " EARTH DAY", APRIL 22 The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology hosted the 1997 Environmental Affairs Forum on Tuesday, April 22, which also was designated as " Earth Day." Presentations on solid waste, air quality and water quality issues were given from different perspectives on the impact of environmental regulation in our lives. Approximately 80 people registered for the forum and students were encouraged to attend the sessions as their schedules permitted. As many as 100 people attended the early morning sessions, with the afternoon sessions averaging 40 to 50 people. Dennis Hood, Physical Scientist from the EROS Data Center, was the luncheon speaker. Hood discussed the EROS Data Center's role in the " Mission to Planet Earth" Program, in which SDSM& T is developing a partnership with the EROS Data Center. The forum was sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) Government and Public Relations Office; SDSM& T Civil and Environmental Engineering Department; SDSM& T ASCE Student Chapter, Black Hills Branch of ASCE; and the South Dakota Solid Waste Management Association ( SDSWMA). The speakers and their topics for the respective sessions were as follows: Solid Waste Issues: Deborah Barton, SDSWMA, Moderator Deborah Barton, Executive Director, SDSWMA: " The Importance of a Professional Organization in the Solid Waste and Recycling Industry" Jerome Wright, Superintendent of Solid Waste Operations, City of Rapid City: " Impacts of Solid Waste Regulations on Operations of a Solid Waste Facility" Karl Fryklind, HDR Engineering, Omaha, NE: " Issues and Challenges of a Career in Solid Waste Management��� Rodney Coker, Tribal Utility Consultant, U. S. Indian Health Service: " Solid Waste Program Activities on Indian Reservations" David Templeton, Administrator, Waste Management Program, SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources ( DENR): " A Perspective of Solid Waste Regulations in South Dakota and the Role of Engineers" Air Quality Issues: Robert Hammer, Environmental Services ( ENSR), Denver ( Moderator) Ron Johnson, SDSM& T Institute of Atmospheric Sciences: " Impact of Proposed PM- 2.5 Regulation on Rapid City" Fred Carl, Environmental Coordinator, Black Hills Power and Light Company: " Environmental Issues at Coal Fired Utilities" Robert Hammer, ENSR: " Rapid City Particulate Air Quality and the New PM- 2.5 Standard" ( Air Quality Issues continued): Tim Rogers, Natural Resources Engineer, DENR: " Overview of the Air Quality Standards and Air Quality Permitting" Ann Rinke, Director, Pennington County Air Quality Office: " Air Quality Issues in Rapid City Water Quality Issues, Steve Schelske, MAXIM, Moderator Peter Ismert, Project Manager, US EPA, Region 8, Federal Facilities Program: " Superfund: Where It's Been and Where It's Going" Kent Woodmansey, Natural Resources Engineer, DENR: " Brief Overview of State Water Quality Standards and Surface Water Discharge Permitting" Scott Kenner, SDSM& T Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering: " Stormwater Quantity and Quality" Van Lindquist, Administrative Manager, West Dakota Water Development District: " The On- Site Wastewater Committee and the Rapid Creek Water Quality Assessment" Comments received on the evaluations were overwhelmingly positive. The focus of next year's forum will be based on the participants' comments about the types of continuing environmental education needed in their professional lives. -- 30 -- |
