St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( June 23, 1997) SDSM& T TO CO- HOST CONFERENCE ON FEDERAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is co- hosting a conference entitled " Federal Environmental Programs in Western South Dakota: Activities, Impacts and Opportunities", which will be held Monday, June 30. Other co- hosts are the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce, the South Dakota Association of Environmental Professionals, and the South Dakota Engineering Society. The event will run from 8: 30 a. m. - 4: 15 p. m. at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. The objective of the conference is to increase awareness of federal projects in western South Dakota. The keynote speaker at the luncheon will be Sherri Goodman, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Environmental Security. Goodman, a senior Pentagon official responsible for all DOD environmental policy and programs, will discuss the future of defense environmental programs. Other speakers on the conference agenda include: Max Dodson, Assistant Administrator, Office of Ecosystems, Protection & Remediation forEPA Region 8, will present an overview of the projects in western South Dakota in which EPA has an oversight role. Dell Petersen, Ellsworth AFB Installation Restoration Program Manager, will discuss theEAFB Accelerated Clean- up Program. William McCollom, Chief of Environmental Compliance, Ellsworth AFB, will present" Enhancing Mission Capability Through Environmental Compliance." Emma Featherman- Sam, Director of the Badlands Bombing Range Project, will provide anoverview of the project designed for cleanup and restoration of the Badlands Bombing Range. Kim Clausen, Ogala Sioux Tribe Environmental Specialist, will describe the environmentalactivities on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Bill Schleining, Facilities Engineer, U. S. Forest Service, will present the status of the ean- u c lp actions of the of ethylene dibromide contamination at Nemo, SD. Dan Driscoll, Chief of Hydrologic Studies, U. S. Geologic Survey, will describe the progressd sta a ntus of the Black Hills Hydrology Study. Bill Markley, Administrator, Ground Water Quality Program, Division of Environmental Quality, South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, will describe DENR's role in managing federal environmental programs. Conference is being organized by Professional Continuing Education, Inc. Registration fee, including lunch, is $ 75. Professors, teachers, and students may attend for $ 35. Lunch only costs $ 25.
