St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( January 8, 1999) MIDLAND RESIDENT RECEIVES SDSM& T DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Midland resident Douglas Aldrich was recently honored by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) as a recipient of the newly established Distinguished Alumni Award during SDSM& T's winter commencement. Doug Aldrich ( ChemE ' 62) works for Dow Corning in Midland, Michigan, and currently is Global Manager for worldwide Laboratory Facilities. He has received numerous awards, appointments and positions of responsibility throughout his career. After graduating from SDSM& T with a chemical engineering degree, Doug joined Dow Corning in Midland, MI. He served in the US Army from 1963- 65, obtained his Master of Science degree in chemical engineering from South Dakota Tech in 1968, and returned to Dow Corning in MI. As a chemical engineer, Doug worked in areas such as a research pilot plant, process engineering, fluids development, sealants technical service, and major programs. As a technical manager, Doug led departments such as consumer product/ market development, elastomers development, metallurgy lab, analytical sciences, and lab operations. His role as facility manager has been Doug's career capstone. Starting with the design and construction of a $ 30 million headquarters research and design building in 1990, his job expanded to operating it for four years. During that period, he also undertook the design and construction of five other labs, completed several major renovations, and integrated safety/ environmental and lab automation services in all the facilities. Taking on a global role in 1994, Doug completed projects in Brazil, Germany, and Singapore. His current job is Global Manager, Laboratory Facilities. This fall was Doug's 29th year of recruiting at SDSM& T. He has hired 75 SDSM& T graduates for full- time jobs at Dow Corning, most of whom have stayed with the company. He has received Dow Corning's Recruiter of the Year Award three times. Doug now serves on the SDSM& T Advisory Council. He was awarded the Order of the Engineer in 1995 and has been a frequent speaker to students and parents during SDSM& T Engineers Week.
