St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( January 7, 1999) SDSM& T STUDENT FROM VIENNA DEMONSTRATES " PENDULUM REACTION" TO GRADE SCHOOL STUDENTS Danielle Englert of Vienna, a 1995 graduate of Willow Lake High School and a senior chemistry major at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T), was a big hit when she recently presented her " Pendulum Reaction" demonstration to fourth and fifth grade students in Rapid City. As part of their SDSM& T Chemistry Outreach class, Englert and several other students featured some of the magical properties of chemistry in a program presented to Robbinsdale Elementary School students. Englert's project showed the pendulum effect of a certain solution as it changed colors resulting from the chemical reactions. The program was enthusiastically received by the grade school students and their teachers. " This has been a wonderful exposure to science for our students, " said Sheila Johnson, teacher at Robbinsdale Elementary School. " We've all learned a lot." ChemOutreach 228 is a new course at SDSM& T that is an integrated class of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors working collectively and with each other. Coordinators of the class are Dr. David Boyles, Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Steve McDowell, Chair of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering and Associate Professor of Chemistry. Englert and the other chemistry students will be presenting their demonstrations again to area K- 12 students during a special Engineers Week program entitled " The Miracles of Chemistry" at 11: 00 am, Friday, February 26, 1999, in the Surbeck Ballroom. Additional information about participating in Engineers Week activities can be obtained by calling the SDSM& T Vice President's Office at 394- 2256. ++ 30++ Photo Caption: Danielle Englert of Vienna prepares a chemical solution to demonstrate the pendulum effect of a chemical reaction changing colors.
