St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( January 15, 1999) CENTERVILLE STUDENT COMPETES IN BUNGEE EGG DROP COMPETITION AT SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY Kristin Lupo of Centerville recently competed in the bungee egg drop competition among freshman engineering teams at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). Lupo is a freshman industrial engineering student at South Dakota Tech in Rapid City, South Dakota. Nine freshman engineering teams competed during halftime of a recent basketball game to see whose bungee design project would drop an egg 20 feet and come as close to the gym floor as possible without touching the floor. The bungee egg drop design project is a part of SDSM& T's innovative Professional Practices in Engineering and Science ( PPES) program designed to restructure the freshman experience so that engineering and science education take on a more holistic approach to the educational process. Lupo and her team members worked on determining the engineering and physics concepts behind the design of a support harness and bungee cord attachment that would achieve the egg drop objectives. The students incorporated three- dimensional graphics, computer programming and spreadsheet modeling as part of their overall design projects. SDSM& T faculty members involved with the PPES project include Dr. Stuart Kellogg, Pietz Associate Professor and Coordinator of Industrial Engineering; Dr. Jon Kellar, Associate Professor of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering; and Dr. Stanley Howard, Chair & Professor of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering. ++ 30++ ( i:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 0199\ Bungee Egg Drop Local Centerville OH)
