St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( January 11, 1999) TOSTON STUDENT ELECTED PRESIDENT OF SDSM& T's AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS STUDENT CHAPTER Kristin Henlsey of Toston was recently elected president of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) Student Chapter at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). A 1996 graduate of Broadwater High School, Kristin is a junior civil engineering major at SDSM& T in Rapid City, South Dakota. She is the daughter of Howard and Judy Henlsey of Toston. The ASCE student chapter at SDSM& T participates in the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference each spring and many other activities throughout the year. Current projects include concrete canoe, steel bridge, technical paper presentation, non- technical paper presentation, mystery design problem, pre- design problem, and the restoration of the Creston Dinosaur. SDSM& T's student chapter has a strong tradition of designing and racing concrete canoes. SDSM& T has placed first in nine of the past eleven regional competitions and has finished in the top five in nationals three times. South Dakota Tech won the National Concrete Canoe Competition in 1995 and hosted the national competition last summer in Rapid City. The National ASCE/ MBT Concrete Canoe Competition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and Master Builders, Inc.
