St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( January 28, 1999) SCHOLARSHIP FUND ESTABLISHED AT SDSM& T FOR MOBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES Steve ( CE' 75) and Terry Newlin have established The Aldeen and Esther Ochsner Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor Terry's parents. This memorial scholarship is to be awarded to an incoming freshman engineering student at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T), with first preference to an incoming freshman who has graduated from Mobridge High School. Additionally, the donors believe that preference for students who have participated in high school athletics be given priority when other attributes are comparable. The amount of the award shall initially be a minimum of $ 750. As subsequent gifts are to be added to the principal, it is the donors' intent that the principal will grow to an amount that would provide a $ 1, 000 scholarship. It is the intent of Steve and Terry Nowlin that their gifts will be matched by Nalco Chemical Company. Subsequent gifts and all earnings are to be added to the principal to be maintained until such time as the endowed scholarship fund reaches the desired principal. Aldeen and Esther Ochsner grew up and attended schools in the Mobridge area. They married in 1951 and made their home in Mobridge while raising four children: Kent, now residing in Sioux Falls; Julie Lavieri and Terry Newlin, both residing in Naperville, Illinois, and Jill Aderhold, who lives in Aberdeen. While living in Mobridge, Aldeen was very involved in his community with active memberships in the American Legion, the Board of Directors of the Mobridge Country Club, the Mobridge Fire Department, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Deacons of his church. He was also extremely involved in the American Legion baseball program ( one of his passions). Esther was also very supportive of their church, the Mobridge Country Club and many other community charities while staying home to help raise their children. Aldeen passed away in August 1971 at the early age of 44. Esther was deceased in October 1986. It is in their memory that this fund is permanently established, with preference given to graduates of Mobridge High School. Their son- in- law, Steve Newlin, is a 1975 civil engineering graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and is currently President of Nalco Chemical Company headquartered in Naperville, Illinois. Their daughter, Terry Newlin, was a graduate of National College in Rapid City and worked many years in the finance area while business relocations took Steve and Terry to various locations in the United States and abroad. They have two sons, Grant, age 10, and Scott, age 7. ++ 30++ ( Photo of Steve and Terry Newlin is available electronically upon request.) ( i: univrel\ pressrele\ 0199\ Mobridge Scholarship) |
