The Devereaux Library will show An American In Paris this Sunday, January 31, at 6: 00 pm in the Elks Theatre. After serving in the U. S. Army's 1st Division during World War II, Kenneth Taylor, who is a native of Emery, South Dakota, was stationed in Paris as part of the Army's 787th Military Police unit. His responsibilities included guarding General Dwight D. Eisenhower. When an individual came through the Army barracks seeking volunteers interested in being movie extras, Ken Taylor decided to take advantage of the opportunity. Taylor spent two days on the movie set in Paris and says he can been seen during the " bicycle built for two" scene in the film. Directed by Hollywood legend Vincente Minnelli, An American In Paris is a 1951 musical extravaganza that features the songs of George and Ira Gershwin. Gene Kelly not only starred in the movie, but also choreographed the entire film, including the legendary fantasy ballet. Many movie buffs consider the dancing to be matched by any film before or after. Leslie Caron also had her first starring role in this movie. An American in Paris swept the Academy Awards with nine nominations and seven Oscars, including a special one to Gene Kelly for his choreography of the fantasy ballet. Admission is by series booklets or by individual tickets sold at the door the evening of the film for $ 4.50 on a space available basis. ++ 30++ ( Media advisory: Kenneth Taylor can be reached at 343- 1854 if you are interested in interviewiing him.
