The first scholarship from the newly created fund will be awarded to a student entering SDSM& T in the fall of 1999 and will be payable over two years. First preference for the scholarship will be given to an incoming freshman who either has been employed by Wheeler Manufacturing Company or whose parents are currently employees of the company. The second and subsequent preferences will be given in the following order— an incoming freshman from the Lemmon community; a freshman applicant from northwestern South Dakota; and an entering student from western South Dakota. The SDSM& T Scholarship Committee will select the recipients and award the scholarships in accordance with these guidelines. Wheeler Manufacturing Company established the scholarship fund as a means of helping to give young people from their company, community or region the opportunity to attend the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Brad and Rob Wheeler graduated from SDSM& T with degrees in mechanical engineering and chemistry respectively. " Tech is a great place to receive a solid education, " said Rob Wheeler. " We hope that this scholarship encourages more young people from the Lemmon area to attend the Mines." "" The Wheeler family's generosity is an investment in the future of not only their community, but that of the School of Mines as well, " added Brad Johnson, Senior Development Officer at the SDSM& T Foundation. " Their gifts demonstrate their leadership and commitment to providing quality education and qualifies them both as National Leaders in our first- ever capital campaign Vision 2000." When the $ 100, 000 endowment goal of this fund is reached, a $ 5, 000 scholarship will be awarded to a student payable over their first two years of education at SDSM& T. " My education at the Mines taught me to think critically and solve problems, " said Brad Wheeler. " Hopefully future generations will be afforded this same opportunity because of this scholarship." Students or parents interested in obtaining additional information may contact Brad Johnson of the SDSM& T Foundation at ( 800) 211- 7591 or Sharon Colombe, SDSM& T Director of Financial Aid, at ( 800) 544- 8162. + 30++ ( i:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 1298\ Wheeler Manufacturing Scholarship fax/ Lemmon, RC, Buffalo, Bison, Abn) |
