D., recently recently was named the 1998 South Dakota Professor of the Year by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education ( CASE). The award recognizes extraordinary dedication to teaching, commitment to students and innovative teaching methods. Boysen is the son of Roy and Emma Boysen, who were long- time residents of Pocahontas. Dr. Boysen serves as Professor of English in the Department of Humanities at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). " This award provides some well deserved recognition of Dr. Boysen's professional achievements as well as the high caliber of faculty that we have on the SDSM& T campus, " said Dr. Richard Gowen, SDSM& T President. " The professors we honor this year embody the spirit of education in their passionate pursuit of knowledge and in their talent to encourage those around them to explore, inquire, and imagine, " said CASE President Eustace Theodore in announcing this year's winners." Their impact on the future of this nation is profound and enduring, as is that of all the dedicated professors teaching on our nation's campuses." In her letter supporting his nomination, junior computer science major Kelly Comet described Dr. Boysen as " invoking a feeling of trust and safety within his classroom with an atmosphere that promotes creativity, laughter and learning." Dr. Boysen has taught at SDSM& T since 1969. This spring he received the 1998 SDSM& T Presidential Award for Outstanding Professor in recognition of his accomplishments in teaching and the positive impact he has had on students over the past three decades. + 30++ ( i:/ univrel/ pressrele/ 1198/ Boysen Professor of Year Pocohontas) |
