The donation is to be used for improving SDSM& T's chemical engineering curriculum by integrating chemical engineering design through process simulation. During a recent campus visit to interview and recruit Tech students, Deanna Bounds and Trudy Wells of Dow Chemical Company made the $ 71, 000 check presentation to SDSM& T President Dr. Richard J. Gowen and Dr. James Munro, Chair of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Bounds ( ChemE 95) and Wells ( ChemE 84) are both Tech alumni. South Dakota Tech's Chemical Engineering ( ChemE) program has been a pioneer in the use of state- of- the- art process simulation systems in the teaching of the capstone senior design course for chemical engineering seniors. The Dow Chemical Company's financial support will enable Tech to purchase a high level engineering workstation that will allow ChemE students from the freshman level through the senior year to utilize the ASPEN PLUS and other process simulation software packages for chemical engineering design projects. " We are grateful for the Dow Chemical Company's generous support to South Dakota Tech, " said SDSM& T President Gowen. " This gift will greatly enhance our chemical engineering curriculum and help ensure that Tech's ChemE graduates have the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the chemical industry's challenges of the 21st century." Nearly 50 Tech alumni are currently employed by Dow Chemical Company, including Gary Veurink ( ChemE 72), a South Dakota native who is General Manager of Asset Utilization Resources for Dow and also serves on the SDSM& T Foundation Trustees and Board of Directors.
