The IIE chapter received the Award for Academic Excellence and the university's SADD members received the Award for Organization Leadership. Board president James O. Hansen presented the awards to student representatives from the organizations during the Board's recent meeting on the SDSM& T campus. The IIE student chapter was honored for its promotion of the profession and for its university and community service projects. The IIE students have promoted the industrial engineering profession through participation in involvement fairs and outreach with local high schools. IIE chapter members gained valuable hands- on experience through participation in a variety of simulation contests and regional and national conferences. Paula Holmes of Hot Springs, past president, and Tanya Harrod of Edgemont, current president, accepted the award on behalf of the IIE chapter. Dr. Carter Kerk, Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering, serves as advisor to the IIE chapter. Members of the Students Against Drinking and Driving ( SADD) chapter at SDSM& T were recognized for their development of a campus- wide response to alcohol use and drinking and driving. In addition to creating a sober- ride program, SADD members were involved in a variety of alcohol awareness programs that stressed the potential consequences of drinking and driving. Reaching beyond the boundaries of the campus, the SADD members took their message to area high schools and participated in several citywide events providing innovative programs. Accepting the award on behalf of SADD were Dawn Recker, chapter president, and Jolie McCoy, SDSM& T Director of University Counseling, chapter advisor. ++ 30++ ( I:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 1098\ BOR Student Organization Awards fax/ statewide) |
