TranscriptParker Palmer, in his book, To know as we are known, makes the statement, " Great teaching is not about technique, but about relationships." It is from that premise I want to spend a few minutes sharing the bragging notes of our new entering students. Each summer, along with orientation registration, I receive 250 or so bragging notes. These are activities, awards, or other events that our incoming students want us to know about them. Perhaps these notes can help you start building relationships with students that can foster the great teaching we all remain committed to here at Mines. Some highlights are: 11 Valedictorians, Salutatorians 11 Regents scholars 6 Eagle Scouts 17 Editors of yearbook, high school newspapers 66 National Honor Society members 30 attended SD Boys or Girls State 32 listed in Who's who among high school students Over 100 involved in high school organized sports 20 received 4H or FFA Honors 36 were a senior class officer We have plumbers, black belts in martial arts, ASE certified mechanics, magicians, a student that became the youngest non- Asian person in the world to obtain a Shiatsu license, and holds weapons fighting titles in Japan, Alaska, Philippines, and Thailand; Harley riders; cosmetologists; camp counselors, vocal and instrumental musicians, joke writer for Jay Leno; self proclaimed high speed computer junkie; pharmacist; thespians; 1st place winner in American Literature from the Lakota Nations Knowledge Bowl; and science and math competition winners of all kinds.
