St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( September 18, 1998) SDSM& T FRESHMAN CLASS INCLUDES JOKE WRITER FOR JAY LENO, MAGICIANS, MECHANICS, MARTIAL ARTS BLACK BELTS, AND THE YOUNGEST NON- ASIAN PERSON IN WORLD TO OBTAIN A SHIATSU LICENSE Members of SDSM& T's freshman class this fall have interesting life experiences and also impressive academic credentials, according to the survey responses from freshman students. Dr. Douglas Lange, SDSM& T Dean of Students, reported that SDSM& T's incoming freshmen have a diverse range of backgrounds and life experiences. These include: a joke writer for Jay Leno black belts in martial arts ASE certified mechanics magicians the youngest non- Asian person in the world to obtain a Shiatsu license ( also holds weapons fighting titles in Japan, Alaska, Philippines, and Thailand) Harley riders cosmetologists camp counselors vocal and instrumental musicians plumbers a self- proclaimed high- speed computer junkie a pharmacist thespians over 100 participants of high school organized sports The freshman students also continue the SDSM& T tradition of having impressive scholastic records. This year's class includes valedictorians and salutatorians, Regents Scholars, Eagle Scouts, editors of yearbooks or high school newspapers, National Honor Society members; delegates to Boys State or Girls State; Who's Who Among High School Students; American Literature winner in the Lakota Nations Knowledge Bowl; recipients of 4- H/ FFA honors; senior class officers; and numerous science and math competition winners. " In his book, To Know As We Are Known, Parker Palmer makes the statement that great teaching is not about technique, but about relationships, " says Dr. Douglas Lange.
