| Transcript | BOX 2230 Brookings, SD 57007 JUL " 6 Isabel Dakotan Solar Rolar Placed 16th The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's Solar Rolar vehicle finished 16th in Sunrayce 95, a 10-day race from Indianapolis, Indiana to Golden, Colorado. Barren Hepper of Isabel served on the support team for the 1, 100-mile race to Colorado. Tech also received two awards at the recognition banquet, including a plaque and $1, 000 cash prize for the best overall use of technology awarded by Sunrayce sponsor, Electronic Data Systems. The second, a Humanitarian Award, went to Solar Motion race manager Ragnar Toennessen for his.efforts in assisting Iowa State University after the team wrecked their vehicle on the final day of competition. Starting positions were determined by qualifying race rounds the week before. Tech's placement was the highest of any , of the other rookie teams. The Solar Rolar finished llth the first day. The fifth day proved challenging for the team, having to "trailer" the vehicle for a day-and-a-half. The Solar Rolar was litterally carried in the trailer, recharging. The team came back, however, on day eight, placing 12th. "We just kept trying our best. We were pleased that we stayed on top among the rookie teams, " Project Leader Chris Scolton of Rapid City explained. According to SDSM&T President Dr. Richard Gowen, "The Solar Rolar Team has provided the leadership to further the nation's j application of solar technology Uo vehicle development. This research and application advances our nation one step further in the implementation of a renewable energy source." Hepper says he suspects the School of Mines will most likely start fresh with a different solar car next year and this one will probably be put on display in a museum. He says he looked at the winning car by the Massa-chusettes Institute of Technology and second place car by the University of Minnesota and California Poly Technical Institute's third place care and found that they were all lighter in weight than Solar Rolar. Darren says that they car had to be trailered twice, but most all of the rookie cars had to be trailered |
