Goldwater Scholar. As a Goldwater Scholar, he is eligible to receive up to $ 7, 500 per year to cover the cost of tuition, fees. Books and room and board. He was one of three Goldwater Scholars attending South Dakota colleges and universities I am also pleased to announce the eleventh annual competition of the scholarship program enacted to pay tribute to Senator Barry M. Goldwater. The United States Congress has established an endowed recognition program, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, to foster and encourage excellence in science, mathematics, and engineering. In the spring of 1999, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Foundation Board of Trustees intends to name up to 300 Goldwater Scholars. The number of scholarships to be awarded per state will be dependent upon the number and qualifications of the nominees from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and considered as one entity, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The scholarship will be for use during the 1999- 2000 academic year and will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $ 7, 500 per year. Junior scholars will be eligible to receive support for a maximum of two years and senior scholars will be eligible to receive support for a maximum of one year. These awards, based on merit, arc made to students who will be college juniors or seniors in September 1999 and who have demonstrated interest in and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. I will have nomination materials and instructions for the nomination by early September. The deadline for receipt of nomination materials is January 15, 1999. The Foundation seeks our most qualified sophomores and juniors with a demonstrated interest in and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in identifying out best students. Student wins $ 15, 000 Goldwater Scholarship: student recently won a national award that recognizes excellence in the mathematics and the sciences. Koepsell was among 316 students named Goldwater Scholars and recipients of the two- year, $ 15, 000 scholarships. He was chosen from 1, 186 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by faculty. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
