St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( July 1, 1998) SCOTLAND STUDENT WINS 8TH PLACE FINISH FOR SDSM& T IN MEN'S DISTANCE CANOE RACE DURING NATIONAL CONCRETE CANOE COMPETITION Jim Cokeley of Scotland won 8th place in the men's distance canoe race for SDSM& T during the 1998 National Concrete Canoe Competition hosted recently by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). Jim and his co- paddler, Josh Warren of Sheridan WY, completed the men's distance event with a time of 4: 33.61, finishing ahead of thirteen other university teams from across the country who qualified for the national competition. Jim will be a junior civil engineering major at SDSM& T this fall and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) Student Chapter at South Dakota Tech. Mark Mutziger of Yankton and Casey Einrem of Avon also were members of the SDSM& T concrete canoe team that competed in the 11th Annual National Concrete Canoe Competition. Mutziger, who made the canoe paper presentation, recently graduated from SDSM& T with highest honors with a B. S. degree in civil engineering. Einrem, a junior civil engineering major, was also one of the paddlers for SDSM& T's concrete canoe named Peacemaker. Although the smallest of the 21 universities that competed in the 11th Annual National Concrete Canoe Competition, SDSM& T earned a 7th place finish overall. The three- day competition, which is sponsored by Master Builders, Inc. and ASCE, drew several hundred people to the Black Hills.
